Amy Schumer LIVE

The comedy world is male*-dominated, women make up only a tiny fraction of comedians headlining shows. In the past year, female* comedians have risen due the publicity of the gender gap in comedy. Social media has been a platform for women in comedy to get their message and jokes out to the public. Amy Schumer told Esquire, “I get labeled a sex comic. But if a guy got up onstage and pulled his dick out, everybody would say: ‘He’s a thinker.’”

Shows like Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer, Chelsea, Girls, Another Period, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Mindy Project, Idiotsitter (Etc). “The female-driven comedy series currently on television showcase great female writers, comedians, producers, and directors who don’t back down, don’t apologize for their brand of wit, and definitely don’t take no for an answer.”

Last weekend my dad and I went to the UIC Pavilion to see Amy Schumer LIVE! After reading her book, Girl With The Lower Back Tattoo, I was excited to see her in person and watch her organically create a memorable show.

The show started with a jazz band and the opening act was Mark Normand. When Amy came out on stage the crowd began to cheer and dance as “Milk,Milk,Lemonade” blasted from the speakers.

Amy joked about hot topics like sex, relationship, the female body, the 2016 election, gun control, and body image. She uses her humor to shift perspective on things that normally make people uncomfortable to talk about. I think that is why Amy is so successful, she brings large issues down to a human level of understanding.

I found it empowering to support another woman who was changing the way the world thought. Amy Schumer told EW, “I am a woman with thoughts and questions and shit to say. I say if I’m beautiful. I say if I’m strong. You will not determine my story — I will. I will speak and share and fuck and love and I will never apologize to the frightened millions who resent that they never had it in them to do it.”

As a feminist and a young woman, I find it important to be able to talk about my body and not be told what is and what isn’t “lady-like.” I have a vagaina and I should be able to talk about it without shocking people, I should be able to say I love myself without people thinking I’m self-centered. There’s a lot of stigma and standards in womanhood and I think women like Amy Schumer are breaking those boundaries, paving the way for women like me who just want to be free.

*I am using these terms as SEX not Gender.
