An Interview with Kristen

I am friends with Kristen on Instagram and I always find her posts to be inspiring. She has an epoering sotry worth reading, she is a working women with a love for health. It’s important to gain a new perspective from someone elses words, this is an interview worth reading.

  1. What is your personal mantra?

My personal mantra is “get shit done.” I know that’s a little rough, but I try not to mince words, and things haven’t always been pretty for me. Things are still definitely not always easy, and I’ve always just stayed motivated by telling myself to keep going and get it done.

  1. How did you become interested in fitness?

When my dad died in 2012 I was really depressed. 2013 was a rough year for my marriage. My husband started going to the gym sometimes twice a day. Many people see the gym as an escape, or a way to battle inner demons, and he was going to war. Personally, I knew that my relationship with food and body image was not a healthy one throughout this time, and even though our family was already vegan and fairly healthy, I still struggled. My husband suggested that I start going to the gym with him to reconnect with each other and so I could regain positive control over my body and fight my own war. I haven’t stopped since.

  1. How do you sustain a healthy lifestyle?

I love food, and my tastes have always leaned more toward the healthier side, so willpower and good food choices have 12530836_1557589941236305_1701590337_nnever been something I’ve struggled with. Once I found the gym, my relationship with food became healthy again. It was then that I was able to start logging my meals to keep track of my macros without ever flinching at my high calorie counts. I began to view good, healthy food as fuel and not my enemy. When we go out, I am sure to look at menus ahead of time to plan what healthy food choices I can make. You really never can go wrong with a salad, some steamed veggies, and a baked potato! I am the person who brings a huge bowl of fruit to every party so I can eat it all. I’m the girl carrying a protein bar in her purse. I just always make sure to have something healthy to eat, no matter where we go. When I want something not so healthy, I’ll have a bite, but only after eating something healthy, that way I always feel fulfilled.

  1. What advice do you have for women who want to start working out?

Don’t be intimidated! I remember feeling so anxious my first day at the gym. I was worried that people would wonder why someone so thin and frail was there, or wonder why a woman would want to lift. Forget everyone else around you. Don’t feel as if you have to be strong to step foo
t  in a gym. That’s why you’re there! Write down a schedule for what muscle groups you plan on hitting each day, and look up workout routines online. Head in there with a plan (or a gym buddy who knows their stuff), put in your headphones, and get to work. You’ll be strong and feel comfortable before you know it.

  1. What does self-love mean to you?

Self love is something that everyone struggles with at some point. As someone who had a very poor relationship with food and who has struggled with through some very rough times, my self worth was nonexistent at times. Self love does not mean thinking that you are perfect. It means that you are okay with who you are in that moment, and that you trust yourself enough to go through whatever process is necessary to make the positive changes you seek.

  1. When you work out, what is your goal?

My fitness goals vary depending on the month. I tend to get an idea in my head about what I want particular body parts to look like, and work very hard to achieve that aesthetic. I do the same thing with yoga poses. I tend to set seemingly unattainable goals and I just don’t stop until I’ve gotten the result I am after. I just want to be stronger, more flexible, happier, and healthier than I was the day before.

  1. What is the best advice you have ever received?13391075_1544641705843205_449873860_n

The best advice I have ever received was to not become my situation. I am not what happens to me. I will not take on the feelings of those around me. I will not allow bad vibes around me. In the past, I’ve allowed the behavior of others, the moods and choices of others, and my situation in life to dictate who I was and how I felt. There is no reason to absorb negativity. The only way to get through a rough situation is to rise above, try to think positively, and persevere.

  1. Who are some of your fitness role models? Why?

Vanessa Espinoza is so bad ass. Her work ethic and strength is admirable and amazing. The work that she puts into her body truly shows. Although he wasn’t vegan, my dad was always the kind of person who could do a pushup and be instantly ripped. He was 5’10” and very lean but always had a six pack and big arms. Whenever I’m having a rough day or a rough workout, I always think about my dad and push through, because I know he’s always with me, and I want to make him proud.
